New pages
This is the feed of new pages in the guide. An entry appears when we publish a new page or significantly expand an existing one. You will not find technology news, software reviews or retellings of other people’s articles here, and no rankings, commercial content or service comparisons either. If a page changes substantially — say, we add a new step to a practical article — a separate dated entry appears in the feed and the earlier one stays as it was. Each entry has a short description, a note on how the page can help you, and topic tags. The full list of pages by preparation date is kept in the guide’s archive.
We publish less often than we could, but every entry in the feed leads to a page you can put to use at home straight away.
How to find the manual for an old appliance
Eight steps with hypothetical examples: the rating plate, the exact model, the box, a reliable source, the service centre, storage.
Why it helps: Saves time when an appliance is playing up and the manual is nowhere to hand.
Questions answered
Twelve short answers: how to search, where to keep documents and files, what to do when something goes missing, how catalogues and archive requests work.
Why it helps: For when you need one precise answer rather than a whole article.
Reference
A glossary in three groups: search, storage, libraries and archives.
Why it helps: Explains words you meet in a catalogue, in an archive request and when talking to a librarian.
Five questions before any search
What you need, where it might be, who keeps it, what else it is called and when to stop.
Why it helps: A short checklist that works for lost keys and an old article alike.
Collections
Three reading routes: a home archive in a weekend, the first half hour after a loss, your first library visit.
Why it helps: Shows what to read in your situation and in what order.
Guide sections
A map of topics: questions and search words, home papers and files, libraries and archives, lost and found.
Why it helps: Helps you see which section holds the answer to your question.

Information is current as of the date it was prepared. Every library, archive, lost-and-found office and service centre sets its own procedures, so check them in person or on the organisation’s official website. Phone and computer menus may also look different after updates.
